Patriarchal Blessings: Weekend Poll

Anyone out there from a tribe other than Manasseh or Ephraim?

I’ve heard of ages as low as 12.  Some say they’ve gotten a new one when the first one didn’t suit.  Mine has grammatical errors placed in it, sort of like how God put dinosaur bones in the earth as a test of our faithfulness.  My mom’s sounds like she will be on the earth during the second coming, but time’s running out!

At what age did you get your patriarchal blessing?

  • 16-18 years old (45%, 51 Votes)
  • 14-15 years old (16%, 18 Votes)
  • As an adult (over 21) (16%, 18 Votes)
  • 19-21 years old (15%, 17 Votes)
  • 12-13 years old (6%, 7 Votes)
  • N/A. Haven't gotten it. (2%, 2 Votes)

Total Voters: 113

    GAAAH! Failed to verify.

Any who, my answer is 14-15. The cultural expectation is that you get it at 14 because that’s how old Joseph Smith was at the first vision. Looking back, wish I was older simply because I didn’t appreciate it as much as I could have.

I was very young (I believe I was 11). However mine was done under unusual circumstances. My grandfather was the Stake patriarch, and he was diagnosed with cancer. We thought he did not have long to live, so we expedited the process so I could receive my prayer from him. However, he miraculously lived – and is still alive to this day (18 years later)!

Where are the responses to the other tribes question? I am from Benjamin and my son is from Dan. Is anybody else from another tribe?

I’ve been doing some research on early black Mormons. Elijah Abel was “an orphan” in his patriarchal blessing. Joseph Ball was of the “Tribe of Joseph”, and Walker Lewis was from the “Tribe of Canaan”. All 3 of these black men held the Melchizedek Priesthood.

I don’t know what to think of being an orphan….

I was 19 when I received my Patriarchal blessing — of the tribe of Ephraim — and was told that my wife and I knew each other in the pre-mortal life and vowed to find each other while in morality and get married to each other.
