People who want to will wear fur and justify it as they feel they can but fur and leather simply aren’t equivalent. For one thing, leather is the by-product of butchering meat that is used for food. Fur is the end in itself and, so far as I know, the carcasses are waste.

Secondly, nutrition is an important human need but, unless people are living a the far north or south latitudes fur is far more a thing of vanity than necessity.

I think many Mormons would raise their eyebrows at fur, not because fur is immoral, but because they see it as flamboyant and immodest. But I absolutely love seeing an elegant rich woman in fur. It is confident, dominant, and chic.

There are many cruel and inhumane practices in the fur industry, and it doesn’t have to be that way. So PETA has a place, but the problem with the anti-fur activists, is that they call for wholesale banning, rather than reform. Banning only makes sense if you believe that no animals should be killed for human consumption, including beef and chicken. So anti-fur activists will only be able to attract a limited percentage of people with that argument. Even though they’ve desperately tried to make anti-fur trendy, it keeps cropping up on the runway. The fact is, fur is an awesome fashion statement.

It’s better to advocate for reforms which could garner more popular support, something everyone can get behind. It’s not as much a question of keeping down prices, like chicken in cages. Fur is a luxury item, and in the luxury industry, people care about how the product is produced. But PETA has completely turned off the rich ladies who buy furs by treating them like murderers. So fur buyers feel extra defiant about ignoring the morality of their purchases. They are not at all interested to know that their fur was humanely produced. So PETA has to do a much better job of trying to win the hearts and minds of fur buyers, and that starts by ending their silly campaign to ban fur on moral grounds.

I’m with alice on this. I do think if we’re taking life for our own use, then we have some obligation to make the best use of all the bits.

I just don’t like fur. Too much of a hassle to keep clean.

I’m pro choice, at least when it comes to purchasing health care, holding religious beliefs, and wearing fur. I’m against the innocent murder of unborn human babies. How there are people out there, who care more about the “murder” of animals in wearing fur, than human babies is appalling to me.

“You roast the unborn?” The Great Pumpkin from The Simpsons.

Animals are here for our use and benefit, for either fur or food.

I’m ok with PETA, as long as it stands for People Eating Tasty Animals. The other PETA are a bunch of radicals that deserve a jail cell.

If I was in the Martin Handcart company and my toes were freezing off and saw a coyote with nice fur…I’d thank the Lord.

But like Nate said, it seems “flamboyant” and it would feel weird to see someone wearing it to church. However, my iPad has the scriptures on it, so that is OK.

Adam and Eve were clothed in skins after they were cast out of the garden. We don’t know what kind of skins or whether the animal(s) were eaten. I think, because we do have dominion, that choices like this should be wisely exercised and that one day we will be accountable. With the advent of modern technology that has synthetic materials to keep us warm I personally don’t see the need for real animal fur.

It’s very hard to take PETA seriously with all the things that they do.
