2nd New Temple Movie Released

By: Guy Templeton
January 23, 2014

It appears that the 2nd new temple movie was released this week.  From what I understand, it is the same length as the first new movie released.  However, I was told that the beginning of the movie is slightly faster paced, and then slows down later.  Can you share anything?  Are the actors any different?  Are any actors recognizable?

I haven’t seen it yet, but I’ve heard there is some racial diversity. I always wondered how all the races of the world came out of the two white bread actors we always saw. Can anyone confirm?

I didn’t recognize any of the actors from elsewhere, and John is somewhat ethnic (half-Latino?). Really liked Adam and the devil! The beautiful gilt look of the spiritual creation reminded me of Annie Henrie’s artwork. Also intrigued to notice some new animal varieties: walrus, koala, porcupine.

The interactions between Adam and Satan are especially well done and provide a lot of depth to his temptation….

“two white bread actors”–Can you write a single post I don’t like on some level? I don’t think so.

Michael Ballam and Corbin Allred played 2 of the previous versions of Satan. Is the new Satan someone we know? Is there anyone recognizable?

I have great difficulty not laughing at Satan, his acting is so over the top and he uses expressions at inappropriate times. I would like to see how he gets from a different peak to Adams alter (like they do in chinese movies?)

I was also very disappointed that they would go to the trouble of making a new movie without changing some of the wording, some just meaningless, and some sexist. Why would satan say “now is the great day of my power, I rule from the rivers to the end of the earth, none will dare to molest or make afraid” Is that bad? And to make it longer, when it could have been shorter?

Haven’t seen a new version of the new one in Australia yet.

I think “none dare to molest” refers to his wielding power and making people behave by force and fear, restricting agency. See his proposal during the council in heaven.

The Adam and Eve actors in the old-new movie are more middle aged. In this new one they’re quite young. Different perspectives in the portrayals. I like that variety and in the pacing that was mentioned. These two new presentations are much more different from each other than the old two. I think this gives us more ideas and symbols to consider and discover. I like it.

A member of the Sunday School General Board was conducting instructor training in my stake this week. In passing she mentioned this 2nd film and told us her understanding is that there is a third being developed.

The Eve in the first new movie looks a lot like a sister in my ward who is an Argentinian of Spanish and Italian extraction, if that counts as “multi-racial.” I haven’t seen the new-new one yet. That first new one was so slow and excruciatingly long, and the dialogue delivered so badly, that I was actually bouncing in my seat in frustration. It ran like a first-year community college drama class project.

Also, for me this new-new Satan is the best of the bunch. He has all the attributes you’d expect – anger, pride, jealousy, mocking, strong, and even happy and friendly at times. I don’t recognize the actor, but he seemed to have most skill/experience of any of the others.

As for running time, for temple schedules doesn’t each presentation (film and audio) need to be essentially identical. So when one part is slowed down, a different part needs to be sped up?

Jared, you’d think so (re. #10), but according to the workers at the Saint Paul Minnesota Temple, the old-new movie was a little bit longer than the old movies. Enough longer that it messed up the schedule a bit.

Elohim is played by David Nibley, and Jehovah by Dallyn Vail Bayles. (You’ll recognize both from the 2005 Joseph Smith film, they play Alvin and Hyrum Smith, respectively)

Adam, Eve, and Lucifer were all faces I had never before seen, but all put on great performances.

I’m fairly confident that Peter in the 2nd new film is Elohim from the 1st new film. They have the same profile. James looks like an older Jean Claude Van Damme, and John looks like a hispanic Donny Osmond.

Nah. I’m pretty sure that “none dare to molest or make afraid” refers to his ability to direct the “Strengthening the Membership Committee” to send folders full of naughty blog postings or scholarly articles to the subject’s stake president, with strong hints that action should be taken against their membership.

I saw the new temple movie this morning. It is the 2nd new movie. And in my opinion it is extremely well done. Adam and Eve convey so much genuine emotion. You can feel the guy wrenching decision making. You can feel the agony. You can feel the joy and relief to know a Savior would be sent to save them from their sins. You can see and feel them turn to the apostles instead of Satan for direction.

At one point, Eve (unlike any previous temple films – and I have seen the oldies (1984) and the 90s (2 versions) and the newest one that came out in 2013) actually starts to walk after or follow after the apostles – wanting more…

I asked two temple workers about getting in a session to watch the version you want to see and they told me the 2nd new movie is the only one they are showing. That the new one from 2013 was pulled and they are not showing it anymore. They said they didn’t know why.
While I like the 2nd new movie better – I would love to see both in circulation.
Anyone have any insights into why the one with Corbin Allred (Saints and Soldiers/Saratov Approach/Diamonds) as Satan is being pulled or if that is true?

I felt more love in this version… Love is what God wants us to have and share.

Both films are currently being shown and the Mt. Timpanogos Temple. Neither has been pulled. (And they still use the Michael Ballam version for people who need other languages.) So, technically there are 3 versions being shown, though the Ballam version is shown quite infrequently.

I’m just curious how all of you are so comfortable discussing this online, or outside the temple, let alone posting it on this site? Doesn’t it make you feel uncomfortable. I understand there is a wealth of information to be had about sacred things online, but how are able to contribute to it without feeling a twinge of guilt? Not condemning you, just wondering…

Amy, the endowment is sacred. Most of it is not secret. There are many things in the endowment that are found in the scriptures: obedience, sacrifice, consecration, chastity, the Creation and Fall, etc., which we are able to speak about on many levels. There are some things which are only for the temple, as well. Discussing who the actors are in a film does not disturb the balance between sacred and secret. BTW, I really like the new film. The cinematography is awesome, great methods shown by Satan to entice, great responses by Adam and Eve, the loving kindness as God places a hand on Jesus and Michael’s shoulders, etc.

Apparently the reason the new films are longer is because it was felt that when some of the dialogue was translated into those languages that are more verbose than English, the speed at which the words needed to be spoken to fit into the same time frame/space (in the old films) as allowed for English had to be increased, thus rendering it less reverent than when spoken in English. The new films will gradually have the various languages added, but the dialogue will not need to be rushed to fit it into the same amount of time as it takes to say it in English.

I prefer the creation scenes from the 2013 remake. The space images, creation sketches and all the baby animals were very awe inspiring. I felt it brought in the science involved in such complex tasks.
I like this newest satan best. He’s what I imagine satan being most like. Charmingly deceptive, very believable and tries to be all buddy buddy. I also liked Corbin’s rendition that depicted him as pathetic and rather desperate. But overall I think this newest one was better.
I really liked seeing Heavenly Father and Christ closer up and seeing Michael’s face knowing what the next step was and his part in it. I also thought the Father looked and sounded an awful lot like David Nibley. I never noticed before how much he and the man who portrayed Jehovah look alike.
Word in sacramento is that they are alternating betwwen the new movies every 2 weeks.

So, does it bother anyone that in all the temple movies Adam is clean shaven? In the old new film, he has dark razor stubble showing–even when he’s in the Garden of Eden. I never imagined that there were razors in that paradise, or did BYU dress and grooming standards apply there also.

Satan in the first new movie….great! 2nd new movie. Comical. With regard to ethnicity….i saw a subtle move to ward some varied ethnic looks. Not sure if this is purpose. Being of an ethnicity with a darker hue……seeing some diversity true to the region would be nice.

With regards to talking about the Temple outside the Temple: Instructions given in the Temple say specifically what you are not to reveal. Everything else is in the scriptures or been preached by the General Authorities and is common knowledge. Maybe not common understanding, but common knowledge. See Genesis. I have shared what I have learned in Sacrament Meeting talks because they fit in with talks from Conference. I just don’t say “I learned this in the Temple”. However, I do imply these things are made clearer and can be understood and learned during the Temple session. BTW, love the Nov 2013 movie. Dislike the 2014 movie (have only seen it once – want to see it again). I thought the emotions by Eve were so faux. The 2013 new movie was +1 all the way.

Thanks to our ancestors for the brave sacrifices for the Constitution and bill of rights. That guarantee all the freedoms we enjoy. The First Amendment allows us to believe how, what, and where to exercise these fragile, and precious rights. Thanks for the stimulating opinions you have shared. I am LDS. I have looked hard all my life to find, for me, The Only True Church.

The 2nd new movie I’m pretty sure Adam and Eve were in the Nauvoo pageant. In 2012 as Joseph and Emma and 2013 as the Irish couple.

Love both new movies they are playing both In Baton Rouge LA temple.

I haven’t seen the newest new movie, but I saw the first new one. It was horrific. The acting was truly terrible, and the pacing and timing dragged the endowment out like a really bad soap opera. Oh, it was painful.

I saw the third movie. I didn’t like the Lucifer, He was a bald slightly overweight dude, but my husband like him and thought he did a good job. To me his face never made any expression. They have a blonde in the third one as well this time. I know there is one movie that is 12 mins shorter than all the others. If you have a patron going through that is listening in another language then they are playing a specific video. I don’t remember which one other than they call it B. All the videos are on rotation, with the exception of another language then they play a specific one. I know for 3 weeks they played the newest one the whole time except with a patron listening in another language. I hear there is a 4th video coming out. The lucifer with the allred dude, the guy that plays Peter he also does the voice of Jesus in the mormon channel The LIght of Men. As well as many other church films.
