Tarefic-Wheaties Nominations 2

December 23, 2013

Last year we introduced two new Bloggernacle awards:  (1) The Wheaties, and (2) the Tarefic Awards!  As we approach the end of the year, it is time to look back on the best and worst of 2013.  Start your nominations!  We want to highlight YOU and your favorite 2013 Mormon blogs, and we are pleased to announce our continued collaboration with Ziff, the mighty numbers cruncher of Zelophehad’s Daughters, who will handle results presentation at the end of this event.  Because some of these are pretty common, we will start with a few nominations, but feel free to add your own.

Write-in category:

And here are the categories for the Tarefic Awards!

Worst Mormon Internet Drama:

  • Cynthia L, By Common Consent:  “Tareific Scandal Rocks Bloggernacle”  (the accidental awarding of BCC over FMH and the ensuing tongue-in-cheek meme war.  Steve Evans responds.  FMH fires back.  Oh, that all internet dramas were equally entertaining to the audience as to the combatants!)
  • Daniel Peterson’s ongoing drama over Mormon liberals, John Dehlin, and his totally unrelated career change
  • The Tom Phillips October Surprise that didn’t happen
  • Denver Snuffer’s Excommunication
  • Anything involving an “Open Letter”

Biggest Soapbox Commenter:

  • Donnette Moore (aka Elizabeth Johnston) and various sock puppets on Let Women Pray and other Mormon Feminist sites.  She was outed after having several conversations with herself about the topic.
  • Will at Wheat & Tares

Commenter that started the most arguments:
Most missed personality on the Bloggernacle:

Worst Mormon Activism:

  • Sheri Dew’s book on Women & the Priesthood right after women were denied entrance to the Priesthood Session
  • Facebook event:  “Support our Priesthood Holders” in response to Ordain Women

Worst Comments:

  • Clayton Clark: “Excommunicate all of them. Sometimes you need to shoot a hostage. You fight against God you will surly [sic] receive your reward.”  (from the I Am LDS thread where they shared an article about the church announcing it would deny entrance to the priesthood session for Ordain Women.)
  • Jettboy, on gay marriage:  “Hopefully Utah Mormons, if no one else, will become far less tolerant of gays and those who support them in the Church. They got their secular “freedom,” and can now lay in the bed they made. You call yourself gay? You have no business coming to church unless you repent and reject that you are one. Then you need to prove it by getting married and staying that way. Mormon gays and supporters think its going to be easier now. Nope. Its going to become much harder. You used to be a nuisance. Now you are a mortal enemy.”

Write-in category:

If you think of another category we haven’t listed, feel free to nominate!  Also, please spread the word!  Some blogs didn’t know about the nominations until it was too late.

Please include a link to the 2013 blog/post/comment that you nominate if you wish it to be considered. Put your link in [brackets] so that it will get through our spam catcher.  As always, you are welcome to nominate yourself, but try to think of some other bloggers to recognize too.  For-profit blogs  will not be considered.  This thread is the place to make any  thoughtful comments, concerns or suggestions on the categories or the process.  They will be duly considered by our panel.  Thank you for your participation. It’s YOU that makes the Wheaties and Tarefic Awards great!

For worst Mormon activism, I want to nominate that event some women held on Facebook called “Support our Priesthood Holders” or something along those lines, in response to the OW priesthood session action, that was just a bunch of people making passive-aggressive comments against women who thought they should hold the priesthood. Does anyone else remember this? Have a link or a more accurate title?

Not sure whether to call it best doctrinal post or best historical post, but I nominate Bill Smith’s BCC series on section 132. Actually there should be an award for best post series.

Paul, I’m going to use your #11 as an activist movement without attributing it to just one post or blog site since so many were involved across multiple blogs in this effort that really paid off.

I would like to self-nominate for best humorous post with Mormon Jargon.

jg: check your timing on that one. I believe Let Women Pray was 2012. Am I mistaken? Can you link it? Aside from that, LWP was also not the moving force behind women praying, which was definitely activism that started in 2011 across the ‘nacle, including this post from Jan 2012: http://www.wheatandtares.org/6757/questions-to-consider/

Brooke – great post, and I’ve added for best title and best personal post. While it’s a call for change, nearly all posts are. I didn’t consider this true activism in the sense of a coordinated effort to bring about a specific change, across multiple forums. But I felt it also met the standard for personal posts nicely.

My husband did a series that is totally nomination worthy, where he went through every single Scripture Mastery in the New Testament and discussed how most of them are being taken out of context and/or mistranslated and/or otherwise misused. The problem is, it was end of 2012-beginning of 2013. And his new series on all the scripture stories from the Old Testament that *aren’t* being used in Sunday School and what we can learn from them is doing the same thing: 2013-2014. Are they just out of the running?

For Biggest Soapbox Commenter, I nominate Donnette Moore/Elizabeth Johnson/???, who were all one person running multiple accounts in order to create negative comments on the Let Women Pray page. She even had fake conversations with herself, and I spent a good deal of time engaging what I though was a small army of women until a few relatives who saw her comments appearing in her stream came on and outed her. I guess this could also be in for Worst Comments; whichever you think is more appropriate. [https://www.facebook.com/LetWomenPray]

  38. Ifrit on December 24, 2013 at 11:19 PM

For Worst Comments, I nominate Clayton Clark from the I Am LDS thread where they shared an article about the church announcing it would deny entrance to the priesthood session for Ordain Women. He said, “Excommunicate all of them. Sometimes you need to shoot a hostage. You fight against God you will surly [sic] receive your reward.” [https://www.facebook.com/wearelds/posts/554541101267987]

That entire thread could be nominated. Much of it was the worst I had seen, and I’ve been through four of these things now. I need to go find the couple where people told me I must not love my children, that I needed to seek medical treatment because I was insisting that childbirth was painful and possibly traumatic.

I have some nominations for best overall blogger. I tried to limit myself to one person per blog, but really I think the bloggernacle is overflowing with excellent writers.

Angela C./Hawkgrrrl of BCC and W&T – She was voted best blogger last year, and has, if anything, increased and improved her output this year, as she’s blogging at both BCC and W&T. Posts like the labeling of the BYU honor code as a sexual harassment enabler and the survey on women’s garments are some of my favorites.

Rebecca J. of BCC – She is *always* funny, but always (in the very same posts) touching and sweet. What a wonderful writer! Her posts about primary should become curriculum for teachers across the Church.

Winterbuzz of fMh – She blogs and works for Sunstone and hosts most of the wonderful fMh podcast. Not to mention handing out flowers to gay couples getting married. [http://www.feministmormonhousewives.org/2013/12/family-isnt-it-about-time/] I’m not quite sure how she’s able to find time to sleep.

April of the Exponent – She’s written a ton of posts I enjoyed this year (this one might be my favorite – [http://www.the-exponent.com/ordination-is-the-answer-to-correlation/]), but it’s also her comments that are excellent. Just about every time I read her comments, I am spontaneously moved to say, “Yes! Spot on!”

Heather of D&S – The author of one of my favorite series on the bloggernacle ever (Equality is Not a Feeling) as well as many other excellent posts like this one: [http://www.dovesandserpents.org/wp/2013/05/motherhood-is-not-the-essense-of-my-personhood/]

I think you should have a specific category for “Best Commentary/Response to the Race and the Priesthood release”. This would allow us to both commemorate this major shift and the nominee list will be a great resource for those looking for good discussion of the shift.

Another for worst comment: Jettboy, on gay marriage:
“Hopefully Utah Mormons, if no one else, will become far less tolerant of gays and those who support them in the Church.
